Strata III

Strata III is a photographic series inspired by the geology of the American Southwest. In the deserts of this region, the very structure of time is sculpted in the rock as the geological narrative is laid bare by the rain and winds which sweep across this vast landscape. As the name implies, Strata III focuses on the linear, horizontal structure of the landscape: the geological strata of the rock formations which are represented by the colour bands which traverse the images. These bands are manipulated and stretched to reflect the horizontal movement as one passes through the vast and open spaces of this region. The focus on the essential characteristics of these landscapes, such as line, colour, and horizontal movement gives me a visual language which allows me to better express my ideas concerning not only the subject matter, but also photography itself.
