STRATA
Strata is a photographic work inspired by the geology of the American southwest. In the deserts of the West, the very structure of time is sculpted in the rock as the geological narrative is laid bare by the rain and winds which sweep across this vast landscape. As the name implies, “Strata” focuses on the linear, horizontal structure of the landscape: the geological strata of the rock formations. Using a technique whereby the image is progressively stretched, these landscapes are reduced to their essential characteristics such as line and color. The images are then stacked to form repetitive horizontal bands of color. The result is a photographic work which verges towards abstraction, and in so doing, focuses our attention on the plastic elements of the images before resolving these elements into recognizable landscapes.
