The original images were taken with black and white film. The negatives were scanned and reworked digitally.
When I first arrived in the South of France in the 90s, the summers were often disturbed by forest fires caused by high winds, heat, and, very often, arson. The images in this series are of my first encounters with the devastation left by the forest fires. Many years later I returned to these images and decided to rework them in a way that is more expressive and personal. The perforations allow the back light to interact with the image creating “sparks or cinders” suggestive of the initial embers which ignite the forest.
Each image is a unique piece.
